MDF Doors

What do you think of when you hear the word ‘door’? If your mind flashes to your front entrance, you’re not alone. Yet your home is actually full of doors: doors on cabinets, doors on cupboards, pantry doors and bathroom doors and closet doors…doors everywhere. Haven’t given them much thought?

At Chaulk, custom cabinetry for kitchens and bathrooms is what we do, so we think about doors a lot. Specifically, we’ve thought about how to make them more versatile, more beautiful, and more affordable for our customers. We have successfully completed enough kitchen remodels and spoken to enough realtors and home buyers to know that cupboard and cabinet doors are a lot more important than most people think. In fact, the kitchen is the heart of every home, and kitchen cabinetry, which essentially boils down to the doors, can be a huge selling point. They can also be the single biggest expense in a kitchen remodel.

At Chaulk, we believe that beauty and durability shouldn’t have to be sacrificed even if you’re on a budget. So if you’re thinking of a kitchen makeover either in advance of selling your home, or simply to enjoy the look of a refreshed kitchen for years to come, MDF doors for every room in your home should be at the top of your wish list.

What are MDF doors?

Outside the building and renovation industry, most people are unfamiliar with the term MDF: It stands for Medium Density Fibreboard, and it is an engineered wood product that is sturdier than particle board but less expensive than plywood. If it comes as a surprise to you that most interior doors today are not made from solid wood, that’s understandable; modern wood veneer or painted laminate finishes make doors look like solid wood when in reality the cost of materials and manufacture for solid wood can be prohibitive for many homeowners.

The MDF composite is made by gluing small wood fibres together at high temperatures to create a solid piece of material. It’s a natural choice for kitchens and baths because it can withstand high heat and humidity levels and its smooth surface is easy to paint and finish any way you want.

Advantages of MDF doors

MDF has many advantages to consider when choosing the right material for your custom cabinetry, doors and cupboards:

  • Environmentally friendly: MDF is made from recycled and recovered wood fibres
  • More stable and durable than wood doors
  • Smoother surface for painting than natural wood
  • Affordability
  • Resists warping, shrinking, cracking and splitting
  • Provides exceptional detailing and clean lines
  • Can be painted in a rainbow of colours
  • Can be finished in virtually limitless ways, such as distressing, staining, lacquer, etc.
